Understanding a children’s human rights approach - JRS KnowHow

While expanding our animation skills, JRS Knowhow approached us kindly to assist in creating a video to help people understand a children’s human rights approach and the importance of The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), commissioned by the Scottish government. Taking their values of accessibility, inclusivity, engagement, and fun to heart, we embarked on creating a piece that both adults and children could watch and learn from. The most important goal was to carefully translate this piece of legislation into a format understandable for children and young people.

Given the significance of this legislation for young people, we worked diligently to ensure that the resulting film was as accessible as possible, meeting the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 standard, as well as adhering to the UNCRC legislation and JRS Knowhow brand guidance. This included, but was not limited to, ensuring particular contrast ratios, comprehension time, and a seizure-safe experience. This also included the creation of closed captions and audio descriptions, ensuring every child and young person can access this information.

Being our first fully animated piece, this project allowed us to grow and explore skills only partially used before. Combining pre-existing assets, bespoke illustrations and children’s artwork such as the project logo, we created something that would instantly connect with those watching. The simple but charming illustrations helped bring ideas to life in away that animation could only do, showcasing the importance of young people to claim their rights.
